 Couples and Adult Practitioner

Edward L. James, III, LMSW, ACSW, is a licensed clinical social worker with nearly five
decades of experience in couples and relationship-focused therapy. I began my clinical practice in 1976 after earning his Master of Social Work degree from the University of
Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

I received specialized training in marriage and family therapy through the Family Services
Agency in Milwaukee, with advanced training from the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family at Georgetown University. I bring more than 14 years of military service, having served as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman specializing in
combat behavioral health and as a U.S. Army Social Work Officer with a focus on evidence-
based on military and family life counseling. I later completed advanced studies in social work
administration at the University of Pennsylvania and public management from Carnegie-Mellon University.

My clinical work centers on couples’ dynamics and relationship repair, informed by training
from The Gottman Institute and integrative use of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I am certified by the National Association of Social
Workers as a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), hold certification in
telehealth mental health services, and maintain professional membership with the American
Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

In recent years, I have specialized in working with men of color, honoring the cultural and
emotional contexts that shape their relational experiences, and supporting the development of effective, authentic communication.
I also offer premarital consultations and annual relationship check-ups—(structured, intentional reviews designed to strengthen trust, commitment, emotional connection, and shared meaning
over time.)
