Working with an Intern at IMHA

Some therapy services at Integrated Mental Health Associates are provided by graduate-level student interns who are currently enrolled in accredited master’s programs in social work, counseling, or marriage and family therapy.

Graduate student interns are clinicians in training and are not independently licensed. All services are provided under close supervision by a fully licensed therapist, ensuring ethical, thoughtful, and high-quality care.

Many clients choose to work with an intern because this option offers:

  • A lower private-pay rate

  • A collaborative, reflective approach

  • Care supported by ongoing supervision

Intern services are private pay only and may not be appropriate for crisis-level concerns or court-involved matters. Working with an intern is always optional, and clients may choose to work with a licensed clinician instead.

If your needs change at any point, we will discuss appropriate next steps, including transitioning to a licensed provider when indicated.

FAQs When Working With Interns

Are interns licensed therapists?
No. Graduate student interns are not independently licensed. All services they provide are delivered under close supervision by a fully licensed therapist.

What does “under supervision” mean?
Interns meet regularly with a licensed supervisor to review cases, treatment goals, and clinical decisions. Supervision adds an extra layer of support and accountability to your care.

Is therapy with an intern effective?
Yes. Many clients have positive and meaningful experiences working with interns. Interns often bring current training, thoughtful preparation, and a collaborative approach, supported by ongoing supervision.

Why is the fee lower for intern services?
Intern services are offered at a reduced private-pay rate to reflect their training status and to increase access to care. Intern services are private pay only and are not billable to insurance.

Are sessions with interns recorded?
Interns may request to record sessions for training and supervision purposes. Recording is always optional and requires separate written consent. You may decline or revoke consent at any time without affecting your care.
